Rising Jazz Star Bunmi Thomas, Born In Britain To Nigerian Parents, Faces Deportation

A jazz singer born in Britain to Nigerian parents is facing deportation after falling foul of controversial Home Office red tape.

In a chilling echo of the Windrush scandal last year, rising music star Bumi Thomas was shocked to be told she is in Britain illegally, despite having lived here for most of her life.
She now faces being sent to Africa, even though her work, family and social life are all in Britain.

Ms Thomas was born in Glasgow in June 1983 to parents who had come from Africa in the early 1970s.

Changes to the British Nationality Act in January 1983 removed the automatic right to citizenship of children born in the UK to parents from former colonies.

The singer’s parents should have registered her under the Act but were unaware they needed to do so. Her plight is harder to bear because her elder sister Kemi, with whom she lives in East London, has always been a British citizen as she was born before the changes to the Act.

Ms Thomas believes she is a victim of the Home Office becoming over-zealous after then Home Secretary Theresa May introduced a ‘hostile environment’ towards illegal migrants in 2012.

The policy resulted in the Windrush scandal, which saw dozens of long-standing British citizens deported because they lacked papers proving their right to be in the country.
Ms Thomas, 36, who has performed on the BBC, said: ‘My parents came here at the end of the Windrush era.

‘I had a National Insurance number, I had my birth certificate, I’d got a driving licence, a bank account, I went to college. At no point during that process was there any indication I was doing anything incorrectly. I believe that I am British.’

Although she was born in Scotland, Ms Thomas lived with her father in Nigeria between the ages of three and 18. She thought she had dual British-Nigerian nationality when she returned to Britain. She applied for a UK passport when she was 25 but she was refused. She was granted temporary discretionary leave to remain and told she could apply for permanent residency.

But two weeks ago, Ms Thomas received a letter saying her application had been unsuccessful, and that she had to leave within 14 days or appeal, or face detention and deportation without notice.

The letter revealed her right to remain had been granted only because she had been in a long-term relationship with a British citizen. It went on to explain that her right was withdrawn after she told the Home Office that the relationship had ended.

She said: ‘I thought it was about my own situation having been born here and spent all my adult life here, but they weren’t interested in that.’

She has chosen to appeal on human rights grounds and her case has been taken up by Liberal Democrat peer Lord Roberts, who intends to bring up her case with a Home Office Minister. But Ms Thomas remains in limbo as her case could take up to eight months to reach its conclusion. Her US performing debut at the Ford Theatre in Los Angeles in October is now in doubt and she estimates that fighting her case so far has cost £7,000 in legal fees.

Ms Thomas’s lawyer, Fahad Ahmed, said she missed out on automatic citizenship by a matter of months and added: ‘Courts take a less harsh view than the Home Office, and if someone can prove their life is here, the courts will use their discretion,’ the UK DailyMail reports.

The Home Office said: ‘All immigration applications are considered on their individual merits.’

Jesus Supports Abortion –Madonna Says As She Pushes For Change In Catholic Church’s Position

Pop superstar Madonna says Jesus supports women having abortions and wants to change the Catholic Church’s position on the issue.

During an interview with Australian talk show host Andrew Denton on “Interview” Tuesday, Madonna, who has a Catholic background, revealed what she would like to discuss with Pope Francis if she had the opportunity to talk to the pontiff.

“Let’s talk about Jesus’ point of view about women. Let’s talk about it,” Madonna said on the TV show, hoping to change the church’s stance on abortion.

“And don’t you think Jesus would agree that a woman has the right to choose what to do with her body?” she asked.

The Christian Post reports that Madonna was raised Catholic and although she was later excommunicated from the church, she told Rolling Stone magazine in 2015 that she regularly uses Christian imagery because of her strong connection to Catholicism.

The music icon has had a long history of ruffling feathers in the Christian community. Her 1989 video for “Like a Prayer” was openly condemned by the Vatican for its disrespectful scenes in the church.

Later on in her career, another of Madonna’s songs, titled “Holy Water,” was condemned for comparing her bodily fluids to holy water used by Catholics to bless themselves. Her “Rebel Heart Tour” also got the singer into some trouble as some of her songs were banned from being performed for being “religiously insensitive.”

Madonna presumes that Jesus supports women “choosing” to abort their unborn babies, and suggests in her new single “God Control” that the Creator opposes people having the right to own guns.

In a sneak peek of her upcoming “God Control” music video released on Tuesday, Madonna declared: “Guns need to be made illegal.”

The clip starts off with the artist admitting that writing songs about “the downfall of humanity” gets her down. “Where does a girl go? She goes to the disco,” Madonna continued.

“Every day they have a kind of victory/Blood of innocence, spread everywhere/They say that we need love/But we need more than this/We lost God control,” the 60-year-old sings on her new album Madame X.

“I tried to bring the world of disco and freedom, and having that joy silenced by a small thing made of metal that can end someone’s life,” Madonna says over a clip of a man with a gun firing rounds into the club.

“Guns need to be made illegal.” The teaser video shows clips of the singer lying on the ground after being shot dead in a nightclub along with others. Some have speculated that Madonna is referencing the tragic Pulse nightclub shooting of 2016, where an ISIS sympathizer shot 49 people dead.

LYRICS

THE LAZY SONG LYRICS

[Chorus]
Today, I don’t feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don’t feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
Cause today, I swear, I’m not doing anything

[Verse 1]
I’m gonna kick my feet up, then stare at the fan
Turn the TV on, throw my hand in my pants
Nobody’s gonna tell me I can’t

I’ll be lounging on the couch
Just chillin’ in my snuggie
Click to MTV, so they can teach me how to dougie
Cause in my castle I’m the freaking man

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh oh, yes I said it
I said it, I said it, cause I can

[Chorus]
Today, I don’t feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don’t feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
Cause today, I swear, I’m not doing anything
Nothing at all
Nothing at all

[Verse 2]
Tomorrow, I’ll wake up, do some P90X
Meet a really nice girl, have some really nice sex
She’s gonna scream out, “This is great!”
(Oh my god, this is great)
Yeah, I might mess around and get my college degree
I bet my old man will be so proud of me
But sorry paps, you’ll just have to wait

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh oh, yes I said it
I said it, I said it, cause I can

[Chorus]
Today, I don’t feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don’t feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
Cause today, I swear, I’m not doing anything

[Bridge]
No, I ain’t gonna comb my hair
Cause I ain’t going anywhere
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
I’ll just strut in my birthday suit
And let everything hang loose

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

[Chorus]
Oh, today, I don’t feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don’t feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
Cause today, I swear, I’m not doing anything
Nothing at all
Nothing at all
