Adamawa government imposes 24-hour curfew

Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri

Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa has imposed a 24-hour curfew throughout the state, citing a breakdown of law and order in Yola, the capital. Fintiri declared the curfew in a special broadcast on Sunday, warning that the government will not fold its hands and allow some few elements to destabilise the relative peace enjoyed in the state.

He said: “Fellow citizens, we cannot allow hoodlums and misguided elements to operate unchallenged when we are already battling with the challenges of insurgency, kidnapping, cattle rustling, banditry and farmer/herders’ clashes. “In view of the above, I have declared and imposed an indefinite curfew throughout the State, beginning from 3 o’clock Sunday, 25th of October, 2020.”

He warned that the movement of vehicles, except those authorized, is prohibited during the curfew. He said the security development followed the activities of some misguided elements who have broken into warehouses owned by the State Government and carted away COVID-19 palliatives. The governor commended the youths in the state for not allowing themselves to be misled into doing anything untoward since the ENDSARS protest began in some parts of the Country.

He said while the government respects the rights of the citizens to seek redress, it notes that there are civilized and responsible ways of channeling genuine grievances. “For the avoidance of doubt, the Government has, through the State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), distributed palliatives through the 260 wards of the State during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, to cushion the effects of the first and second lockdowns declared in the State.

“Two weeks into the first lockdown, with an end to the pandemic not in sight, I directed that more foodstuffs be released to the people and distributed to the 21 Local Government Areas. “Considering the hardship experienced by workers, especially those at the lower cadre, I directed a third round of distribution of food items to all workers from Grade Levels 1 to 6,” Fintiri said.

US: Mike Pence’s chief of staff contracts virus

Marc Short began quarantine and was assisting in the contract tracing process, Pence spokesman Devin O’Malley said in a statement.

US Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday, a spokesman said, the latest in a list of figures connected to Donald Trump’s administration to do so.

Marc Short began quarantine and was assisting in the contract tracing process, Pence spokesman Devin O’Malley said in a statement.

“Vice President Pence and Mrs. Pence both tested negative for Covid-19 today, and remain in good health,” he added.

Pence, who has been campaigning ahead of the November 3 election, will maintain his current schedule in consultation with White House doctors, said the spokesman.

A surge in Covid-19 cases led to the United States reaching a record number of daily infections for a second day running on Saturday, with nearly 89,000 new cases.

A list of people connected to the White House have contracted the virus, including President Trump, who was hospitalized before recovering.

Trump has downplayed the seriousness of the virus, calling for businesses to reopen so the economy can recover.

Joe Biden, his Democratic opponent in the upcoming polls, has repeatedly criticized Trump’s handling of the health crisis.

The virus has claimed more than 224,000 American lives.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, while speaking on the commencement of the campaign on Thursday, said it was initiated after discovering that members of the public did not comply with the directives.

The Lagos State government said it would investigate reports of shootings at the Lekki Toll plaza, which followed the 24-hour curfew imposed to stop criminals hiding under the #ENDSARS protests to unleash mayhem on innocent citizens.

According to him, the government has ordered investigation into the incident.

“He advises Lagosians to remain calm and not allow criminals, who have hijacked the noble protest of our gallant youths, to succeed in their evil plan of turning our dear State upside down.

“The Governor will do everything within his power to ensure that the lives of all Lagosians are protected at all times,” he said.

#EndSARS: Stop killing peaceful protesters – Hillary Clinton tells President Buhari

Newscom

Former United States presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, has made a public appeal to Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari to end the killing of peaceful protesters.

Her public appeal came in light of #EndSARS protesters who were attacked by security operatives during a violent crackdown in Lagos on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

As part of nationwide demonstrations over the past two weeks, hundreds of protesters have shut down the Lekki-Epe toll gate for over one week demanding comprehensive police reform.

State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, imposed a 24-hour curfew on Tuesday afternoon after an uptick of violence from thugs who tried to hijack the peaceful protests.

Scores of protesters refused to leave the toll gate despite the curfew which was originally set to commence at 4 pm, but was later extended to 9 pm.

Eyewitnesses at the toll gate who livestreamed reported that soldiers drafted to the scene shot live rounds at protesters who staged a peaceful sit-in demonstration.

One of the protesters on the scene reported that he had seen the corpses of seven people in the chaos that ensued on Tuesday night.

Many Nigerians have faulted President Buhari, Governor Sanwo-Olu, and the Army’s leadership for the killing of the protesters.

“I’m calling on @mbuhari and the @hqnigerianarmy to stop killing young #EndSARS protesters. #StopNigeriaGovernment,” Clinton tweeted on Tuesday.

Over a dozen peaceful protesters have also been killed by police officers and thugs over the past two weeks of demonstrations.

Manchester United set new club record after another Champions League win vs Paris Saint-Germain

A late winner from Marcus Rashford saw the Red Devils win 2-1 against the Parisians at the Parc des Princes - the scene of their famous Champions League win versus PSG in 2019.

Manchester United’s victory against PSG in the Champions League has seen the club win 10 consecutive away games for the first time in their history.

A late winner from Marcus Rashford saw the Red Devils win 2-1 against the Parisians at the Parc des Princes – the scene of their famous Champions League win versus PSG in 2019.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have now won their last 10 matches on the road, dating back to the 2-1 extra-time win against Norwich City in the FA Cup on June 27.

Since Harry Maguire’s 118th minute to sink the Canaries, United have beaten Brighton (three times), Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Luton Town, Newcastle United and now PSG.

The victory against PSG was arguably the best performance of the Red Devils’ streak, with United having more shots on target than PSG (six to five) despite only having 39 percent possession.

United enjoyed a stroke of fortune to open the scoring, with Bruno Fernandes seeing his penalty saved after Anthony Martial was fouled but converting the retake after VAR correctly ruled PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas had left his line early to block the first spot kick.

PSG came out all guns blazing the second half and eventually forced a deserved equaliser when Martial headed a corner into his own net 10 minutes after the restart.

But Solskjaer’s team continued to dig in and started to create several chances on the break as PSG poured numbers forward looking for a winner.

Rashford provided the decisive moment in the match on 87 minutes, taking Paul Pogba’s pass and rifling a low shot in off the post from outside the area.

“Of course it’s a nice feeling,” Rashford told BT Sport of his winning goal. “More importantly, we won the game.

“We’re in a strong position now in the group but it’s the first game. The concentration levels we showed today we have to take forward into the next game.
“For me, they were both opportunities to win the game. As a striker, in the game late on, that’s the mentality. You might only get one chance. It gets us the three points.
“It’s a good performance but also one where we have a lot to build on. I always believe in the team.

“As players it’s important to believe in the system that the manager chooses to play. We did that fantastically. It was tough but we kept the intensity high. We had to defend very deep at times.”

Lagos curfew: #EndSARS protesters agree to stop road blockage

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) said that the Nigerian economy has lost over N700 billion to the #EndSARS protests over the last 12 days.

The leaders of the #EndSARS protesters along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have said they will lift the blockage along the expressway for vehicles to be able to move into Lagos by 2pm (today).

This followed the announcement by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to impose a 24-hour curfew on the state effective 4 pm.

One of the protesters, who spoke to newsmen said, “We will leave the road by 2 pm so that the vehicles can move because of the curfew that has just been announced by Lagos.

“We need to let the vehicles move into Lagos.”

Long queues of vehicles that were stuck in the standstill traffic were still seen on the road as they were still unable to move.

No vehicle was seen moving into the Expressway way from Lagos, showing that most of the vehicles coming into Ogun State could not pass.

However, the protesters in their large number were still occupying the roads and continuing with their activities.

Sanwo-Olu said in a statement, “I have watched with shock how what began as a peaceful #EndSARS protest has degenerated into a monster that is threatening the well-being of our society.

“Lives and limbs have been lost as criminals and miscreants are now hiding under the umbrella of these protests to unleash mayhem on our state.

“As a government that is alive to its responsibility and has shown a commitment to the movement #EndSARS, we will not watch and allow anarchy in our dear state.

“I therefore, hereby impose a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the State as from 4pm today, 20th October, 2020.

“Nobody, except essential service providers and first responders must be found on the streets.”

Miayetti Allah vows to expose hoodlums disguising as herdsmen in South East

Fulani herdsmen

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has reiterated its commitment to checkmate activities of infiltrators and criminals who disguise as herders to wreck havoc in South East.

MACBAN South East Chairman, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu.

Siddiki said that the move was aimed at engendering a peaceful relationship as well as winning the confidence and understanding of members in host communities.

He said that the association had ensured that the herders in their different localities were regularly briefed on how to improve on the relationship with their host government and communities.

“We are encouraged by the commitment of the government and a good number of the people of the South East in fostering harmonious relationship with the herders.

“We shall continue to canvass for best practices in cattle rearing among our people to stem frictions with the natives,” he said.

Siddiki said that the association also frowned at allowing underage children to tend cattle in public places and would not hesitate to expose any herder whose acts were suggestive of crime.

“This will go a long way in distancing MACBAN from the blanket condemnation it frequently suffers most times criminals attack innocent citizens.

“Our children should be encouraged to go to school and not allowed to tend cattle in public spaces but if they must be out rearing, they must be duly guided by adults in their company,” he said.

He said that the association had outlawed night grazing as it gave room for possible damage to farms and other facilities.

“We, however, plead with the states government in the zone to allow movement of cattle on the highways at night.

“While we consider other more viable alternatives for moving our herds of cattle.

“This is without prejudice to the inalienable rights and safety of other road users in those hours. We shall continue to give our people proper orientation to improved cattle control on such night transit,” he said.

Siddiki said that MACBAN shared in the responsibility of building bridges of understanding and cohesion between the North and the South East.

“We shall continue to warmly publicise the hospitality we enjoy here in spite of our cultural differences,” he said.

“With sincerity of purpose among leaders, institutions and government, the harmony that will guarantee stability in the polity will be attained,” he said.

#EndSARS Protesters Led By Comedian, Mr Macaroni, Shift Demonstration To Tuesday, Others Vow To Continue

Some protesters led by comedian, Mr Maccaroni, have decided to shift the #EndSARS protest to Tuesday after talks with the Lagos State Government.

The protesters had gathered outside the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa on Friday to ask the Nigeria Police Force to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Units over rights violations.

Some protest leaders, however, met with government representatives in a plot to quell the demonstration.

Shortly after, the protest leaders emerged with the deputy governor of Lagos, Obafemi Hamzat, to address the crowd.

The crowd, however, booed Hamzat, who was suggesting police reform.

Mr Macaroni, Sydney Talker among other celebrities later announced to the crowd that the protest will be suspended until Tuesday when government promised to give a feedback on their agitations.

Some protesters from the #RevolutionNow group, however, disagreed, vowing to continue to occupy the Assembly complex until SARS was disbanded.

BREAKING: Naira Marley Condemns #EndSARS Agitations After Cancelling Planned Protest

Nigerian musician, Azeez Fashola widely known as Naira Marley, has said that the agitation to end police brutality in the country was fuelled by armed robbers and that there was no need to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit of the police.

SARS is notorious for arbitrary killings and other rights violations of innocent civilians in a bid to extort them.

Naira Marley made the comments in an Instagram Live session monitored by SaharaReporters on Tuesday.

He added that concerns around COVID-19 also led to the cancellation of the protest earlier billed for Tuesday morning.

He said, “We need to reform SARS. Let’s be reasonable, are you an armed robber? Why will you say they should end SARS. If you end SARS, it means they should end EFCC and other agencies. All we have to do is get them off the road.

“Nobody threatened me, I know my rights. What stopped me was thinking of the safety of everybody and I saw that the police issued a statement.”
